That this House is alarmed by the recent study published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE, that identifies sugar as a predictor of diabetes separately from obesity; notes that the study examined the availability of sugar and diabetes rates from 175 countries worldwide over the last decade, finding that the more sugar available in a country the greater the incidence of diabetes; further notes the study found that for every extra 150 calories available from all sources the prevalence of diabetes rose by 0.1 per cent but for every extra 150 calories from sugar then prevalance rose by 1.1 per cent; recognises the need to address the growing diabetes epidemic in the UK; and calls on the Department of Health to respond to the report by re-evaluating the toxicity of sugar.
