The motion
That this House is alarmed that the orangutans of Borneo and Sumatra are living with the threat of extinction due to their habitat loss; notes that there are only 6,600 individuals in Sumatra and 54,000 in Borneo and expresses its concern at the drastic reduction of the species; acknowledges that the illegal actions of loggers in Indonesia, which amounts to between 73 and 88 per cent of the logging in that country, is rapidly diminishing the indigenous landscape; understands that palm oil production companies have destroyed 6.5 million hectares of the rain forest, which is essential to the orangutan's survival; and therefore calls on the Government to make representations to the government of Indonesia.
