COMMUNICATIONS DATA BILL

That this House notes that there is a lobby to progress the Communications Data Bill; further notes that the Home Office has indicated that encrypted data would not be stored; further notes that the main services used for communication between individuals such as hotmail, gmail and Twitter use encrypted data by default, as is obvious from the https: at the front of the URL as opposed to http; believes that, notwithstanding the questions about civil liberties, it would be a waste of parliamentary time to pass into statute legislation which merely enables the security services to know what music people are listening to; and calls for the Government to obtain a proper technical study of the feasibility of obtaining the information they wish to obtain, which the hon. Member for Birmingham, Yardley is willing to do for no charge, before wasting any more time or scarce Government resources on the issue.
