EGYPT'S MILITARY REGIME

That this House notes with concern the continuing political crisis in Egypt, currently estimated to have claimed over 6,000 lives, of which over 4,000 were lost during the clearances of both Rabaa and Nahda Square on 14 August 2013, and to have led to incarceration of over 12,000 political detainees; believes that all military aid to Egypt should be suspended, not just equipment which might be used for internal repression as advised by the Council of the European Union; further believes that the UK should use all its diplomatic means to ensure that international human rights organisations are allowed access to the democratically-elected Egyptian President and other political figures that are presently under detention and torture; calls on the Government to freeze all assets belonging to the generals of the Egyptian military regime held within the UK and to petition all other EU member states to enact similar measures; further calls for the Government to openly condemn the ongoing repression that is being practiced by the military regime, including the shutting down of several TV channels; and urges that the Egyptian Ambassador to the UK be asked to leave the country owing to his inaccurate and insensitive comments comparing the Muslim Brotherhood to a Nazi group, which have caused great offence to many UK citizens regardless of their personal political beliefs.
