COUNTY OF RUTLAND

That this House deplores the abolition of Rutland County Council in 1974; welcomes the fact that boundary notices for the historic little county of Rutland proudly exist on roads coming into it and on the A1 road which goes through it; is glad that the existence of Rutland District Council, exactly coterminous with the boundaries of the county, means that the name Rutland is very much alive and in continuous daily use; hopes that any letter sent to an address in the little county will have the name Rutland on the envelope in large capital letters, accompanied temporarily if necessary by the name Leicestershire in much smaller letters, or better still by a post code only; and welcomes the prospect, under the new Local Government Bill (H.L), that Rutland will again be established as a unitary authority, to be called, naturally, Rutland County Council.
