SCOTCH WHISKY AND THE SINGLE EUROPEAN MARKET

Tabled by Sir Hector Monro (Conservative) 142 signatures

The motion

That this House congratulates Her Majesty's Government for its persistence and success in achieving an improved transition period for duty-free trade within the EC, with its consequential benefits for Scotch whisky and other United Kingdom spirits producers whose performance in export markets is so crucial to the United Kingdom's balance of payments; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to be equally resolute in its pursuit of a fair and equitable resolution of the forthcoming negotiations on harmonisation of excise duties for completion of the single European market, so the United Kingdom's Scotch whisky and other spirits producers are not seriously disadvantaged after 1992 in their major overseas market.
