The motion
That this House wholeheartedly supports World Thrombosis Day in raising global awareness of deadly venous thromboembolism (VTE) blood clots; congratulates the NHS on becoming a world leader in risk assessing hospital in-patients; notes that cancer patients are at particular increased risk, with up to 4,000 cancer deaths per year due to VTE as recorded on death certificates; further notes the All-Party Parliamentary Thrombosis Group's recommendations on reducing these risks in cancer patients, notably by increasing clinical awareness, mandating risk assessment of chemotherapy out-patients, ensuring appropriate prescribing of preventative treatment takes place, and ensuring patients are provided with essential information; and calls on NHS chemotherapy Clinical Reference Group service specifications to stipulate VTE prevention best practice and for a VTE question to be included in the Cancer Patient Experience Survey.
