NATIONAL ROAD VICTIM MONTH 2016

That this House commends the national road safety charity RoadPeace for organising National Road Victim Month every August to remember those killed or injured on the roads; notes that August is a particularly poignant month since the first person ever killed in the UK by a car, Bridget Driscoll, died on 17 August 1896; further notes that there is an increased risk of children being injured or killed while on holiday from school and encourages increased caution; notes that, according to Department for Transport figures, there were 1,780 deaths on UK roads in the year ending September 2015, with a further 21,920 people seriously injured; supports plans by the Secretary of State for Justice to launch a consultation later in 2016 on how criminal driving laws can be strengthened; notes that the review to strengthen these laws was originally launched on 6 May 2014; and urges Ministers to avoid further delays, expedite their plans where possible and help to deliver justice for victims of criminal driving.
