HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 2016 (No. 2)

That this House acknowledges that Human Rights Day, on 10 December 2016, provides a timely reminder of how important it is that all those who defend human rights around the world are safe from attack, that all people have the freedom of thought, conscience and religion and can claim their right to speak out, organise and challenge injustice; believes that the UK's prioritisation of trade and investment should not be at the expense of human rights; and considers that this can be achieved more effectively if human rights expertise were to be included on UK trade delegations, if training on human rights was provided to Department for International Trade staff, and if any future UK bilateral or multilateral trade and investment agreements were to be framed in a way that is compatible with the protection of human rights and with the need for those adversely affected by investment projects to have access to remedy, in keeping with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
