CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY BY THE ASSAD REGIME IN SYRIA

That this House takes note of the recent evidence of crimes against humanity committed by the Assad regime against citizens in Syria at Saydnaya Military Prison; notes with great concern the compelling evidence that at this prison, the Syrian Government has systematically and deliberately murdered, starved, tortured and executed thousands of civilians who were thought to be opponents of the regime in an attempt to maintain power and crush resistance; further notes the utter brutality of conditions at Saydnaya; believes that the UK has a duty to oppose crimes against humanity; calls on the Government to urgently reappraise the number of refugees from Syria who have been accepted into the UK, and to do everything possible to provide a place of safety for more refugees who are fleeing from that murderous regime; further calls on the Government to reconsider its plans to reduce access to the UK for child refugees; calls on the Government to ensure that the UK does everything possible to bring to justice those responsible for this atrocity, and the many other atrocities committed by the Assad regime against the Syrian people; believes that the UK should raise with the UN Security Council the need for targeted sanctions, such as asset freezes, on members of the Syrian regime; and calls on the Government to raise with the UN Security Council the need to refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court.
