LOWER EARNINGS LIMIT

Tabled by Angela Crawley (Scottish National Party) 27 signatures

The motion

That this House recognises that the Government's 2017 pledge to remove the Lower Earnings Limit (LEL) would provide a boost for the retirement pots of low-income workers; understands that the Government has given only a vague timescale commitment to lower the threshold in the mid-2020s; believes that low paid workers will be left thousands of pounds worse off due to missed contributions and investment gains should the Government delay this change in policy; acknowledges that more than nine million workers have missed out on auto-enrolment as they do not meet age and earnings eligibility criteria; and calls on the Govemment to take forward the promised pension reforms and remove the LEL sooner rather than later.
