THE UK'S PROGRESS TOWARDS NET ZERO CARBON EMISSIONS

That this House recognises that climate change is the single most important issue facing our planet; notes with concern that 2018 was the fourth-hottest year on record, with average global temperatures now 1°C above the pre-industrial average; celebrates the action taken by young people across the UK who have reminded hon. Members of their responsibility on this issue; pays tribute to the work of the firefighters who fought the recent fires on Saddleworth Moor and elsewhere; notes the urgency of the issue of climate change in light of the increase in extreme weather; is deeply alarmed by the recent warning from the IPCC, which advised that global emissions must be halved in 12 years if global warming is to be limited to 1.5 degrees; welcomes the Government’s ambition to host the 2020 COP Summit; calls on the Government to urgently accelerate the switch away from a fossil fuel economy and to massively invest in clean energy and low-carbon technologies; and further calls on the Government to set a world-leading target to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
