The motion
That this House expresses its extreme concern about the Government of Turkey’s military invasion of the area of north-east Syria controlled by Syrian Kurds that is known as Rojava and its negative humanitarian consequences following the unexpected announcement of the withdrawal of US military forces from that area; notes the crucial role played by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in the fight against IS in Syria, which resulted in the loss of more than 10,000 of their fighters; believes that this invasion will inevitably force the Kurds into an alliance with Bashar al-Assad and his Russian backers, that it will revive and strengthen IS, thousands of whose fighters are held by the Syrian Defence Forces, and that it will undermine the security and stability of Syria and the region; calls on the Government to suspend all arms exports to Turkey; urges the Turkish Government, with other NATO members, to end military action in Syria immediately and to pursue its security concerns through political and diplomatic means and to ensure that vital humanitarian support is provided to those in need.
