40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST ASCENT OF MOUNT EVEREST

That this House notes the 40th anniversary in May 1993 of the climbing of Mount Everest, 11.30 am: 29th May 1953; congratulates all those involved in the successful expedition; recognises that mountaineering is a sport which crosses all barriers, gives great pleasure to both active and armchair participants and aids physical fitness and social welfare; and calls on the Government to introduce a statutory right to roam, ensuring free access to the countryside in order that the coming generation can continue to enjoy the benefits of the sport and achieve the heights scaled by the successful Mount Everest expedition.
