Bank holiday for the 75th anniversary of VE Day and the Defence Discount Service

That this House calls on the Government to mark the 75th Anniversary of VE Day by making Friday 8 May 2020 an bank holiday and to reinstate the traditional May Day Bank Holiday on Monday 4 May; notes the history of the May Day bank holiday and its links with International Workers' Day; acknowledges the service and sacrifice of working people that fought in the Second World War and made possible the Allied Victory that led to VE Day on 8 May 1945; believes that marking the 75 Anniversary should be separate and distinct from other UK bank holidays in 2020, further believes that Friday 8 May and VE Day celebrations provide an opportunity to recognise the contributions the armed forces and veterans make to the wider community; and calls on the Government to encourage businesses and retailers to recognise that contribution by offering special offers and discounts on VE Day and to sign up to be part of the Defence Discount Service, the only official Ministry of Defence discount service for the armed forces, veterans and the defence community.
