Commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Radical War of 1820

That this House acknowledges the 200 year anniversary this month of the Scottish Insurrection or Radical War; applauds the efforts of those who fought for the universal franchise and wider social and economic rights; recognises the sacrifice, in particular of the three 1820 Martyrs, James Wilson, John Baird and Andrew Hardie who were hanged and beheaded and who are remembered every year at the Martyrs’ Monument in Sighthill Cemetery in Glasgow North East; notes that the sacrifices of these and others at the hands of a ruthless government, including the 19 who were transported to penal colonies in Australia, have never received the attention they deserve and calls for this oversight be corrected; commends members of the 1820 Society for their dedicated efforts to bring these long neglected events to their deserved place in the public consciousness; and calls for the commemorative activities which were scheduled to take place in 2020 to be rescheduled and to be promoted and widely celebrated, not just in Scotland but throughout the whole of these islands so that these remarkable events and the 1820 martyrs take their deserved place in history and that their sacrifices in pursuit of justice and fairness serve as inspiration to all those who share those values.
