Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 2022

That this House notes September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and an opportunity to raise public awareness, call for an increased focus on funding scientific research, and to help support families affected by childhood cancers; regrets that every day in the UK twelve children and young people will receive the devastating news that they have cancer; notes that despite survival rates improving to around 80% in the UK over the past decade, cancer remains the largest cause of death from disease in children and young people, with nearly 250 children tragically dying from cancer in the UK annually; recognises that the treatment for childhood cancer often spans many years and that the side-effects of treatment can unfortunately last into early adulthood or later life; encourages the UK Government to provide additional funding and support for research into childhood cancers to ensure that new therapies can be personalised in such a way as to improve survival outcomes and reduce the incidence of long term side effects of treatment; and further notes that Childhood Cancer Awareness Month has adopted a gold ribbon as a symbol, and that 23 September is “Wear it Gold Day.”
