International Men’s Day and prostate cancer

The motion

That this House acknowledges that International Men’s Day, observed globally each year on 19 November, highlights issues affecting men, including prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer in men, with more than 56,000 men diagnosed and 12,000 dying each year in the UK; notes with concern that Black men face double the risk of developing prostate cancer and are twice as likely to die from it compared to their White counterparts; emphasises that too many men die from prostate cancer due to late diagnosis and that early detection saves lives; recognises the importance of continued investment to build the evidence for a safe and accurate screening programme, including Prostate Cancer UK’s TRANSFORM trial in partnership with government; highlights that targeted screening using prostate-specific antigen blood tests for early detection in primary care, particularly for Black men over 45 and men with a family history, is essential to save lives in highest-risk groups; calls on the Government to review the Prostate Cancer Risk Management Programme in line with the National Screening Committee’s recommendation, irrespective of the Committee’s conclusion; and urges the forthcoming National Cancer Plan for England to prioritise early detection of prostate cancer to reduce health inequalities and improve outcomes for all men at risk.
