The motion
That this House recognises the serious impact that Paediatric Acute Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), including its better-known sub-condition Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS), can have on affected children, young people and their families; notes that these conditions are understood to arise from a misdirected immune response to an infection or other pathogenic trigger, leading to the sudden onset of symptoms including obsessive compulsive disorder, tics, restricted food intake, and significant cognitive and behavioural changes; acknowledges the challenges faced by families in seeking understanding and appropriate support;
commends the efforts of individuals, families and professionals who have established PANS+ Scotland to provide improved support and understanding and to raise awareness of PANS and other immune-mediated neuropsychiatric conditions; and encourages greater awareness and understanding of these conditions across health, social care and education services in Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch and throughout Scotland.
