The motion
That this House congratulates athletics legend Steve Cram CBE on being officially recognised at Monkton Stadium in Jarrow for his outstanding contribution to sport in the North East; commends his contribution to athletics as one of the world’s legendary middle distance runners during the 1980s; applauds his achievements in the world of athletics by setting world records in the 1500 metres and 2000 metres in just 19 days in 1985 becoming the first man to run the mile in just three minutes and forty-six seconds and securing his place among the greatest middle-distance athletes of all time; further applauds his sporting achievements by taking the Silver medal in the 1500m Olympic Games in 1984; recognises the Jarrow Arrow’s contribution to television and media as a presenter, commentator and athletics coach; celebrates his role raising the profile of North East sport and his outstanding charity work, helping to raise millions for good causes and grassroots sport; and further warmly congratulates him on this fully deserved recognition.
