75th anniversary of the Easington Pit Disaster

The motion

That this House commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Easington Pit Disaster of 29 May 1951, in which 83 men lost their lives following an explosion at Easington Colliery in County Durham; remembers the 81 miners who died underground, together with the two rescue workers who lost their lives attempting to save others in the aftermath of the disaster; expresses its deepest sympathy with the families and wider community affected by the tragedy; pays tribute to the courage, comradeship and sacrifice of those employed in Britain’s coal industry who worked under dangerous and demanding conditions; recognises the immense contribution made by mining communities to the industrial strength, prosperity and social progress of the United Kingdom; further recognises the debt owed by the nation to coalfield communities; notes the enduring legacy of solidarity, resilience and collective endeavours forged within coalfield communities; thanks all those involved in organising the anniversary commemorations, including Easington Banner Committee and Easington Colliery Parish Council; and calls on future generations to remember the sacrifice and contribution of the men of Easington and of mining communities across the country.
