Domestic abuse and the FIFA World Cup

The motion

That this House notes that instances of domestic abuse will increase during this FIFA World Cup and that many women will be watching the games with fear, concerned for their safety and that of their children when the final whistle blows; recognises that the behaviours accompanying such major sporting tournaments like alcohol consumption, heightened emotional states, and anticipation associated with betting activity can exacerbate pre-existing violent and coercive behaviour and increase the likelihood of instances of violence; further recognises that the later a game is scheduled, the more likely abuse is to occur due to the longer time period for which a perpetrator is drinking and associated increased alcohol consumption; understands that many organisations providing domestic abuse support services will be under immense pressure as the demand grows throughout this tournament; is alarmed that cuts to health and social services, ever-reducing government funding and short-term commissioning rounds mean many vital support organisations across the country are already at capacity; and calls on the Government to condemn domestic abuse in all its forms, and ensure that domestic abuse services receive sustainable and long-term funding so that every survivor has access to the support they desperately need.
