1,100 years since the political unification of England

That this House notes that 2027 will mark 1,100 years since the year 927, when King Athelstan took control of York and brought Northumbria into the first politically united English kingdom; recognises that this anniversary is not only a national moment, but a northern one, with York, Yorkshire and the old kingdom of Northumbria at the heart of the story of England’s formation; believes that the occasion should be marked with pride in England’s history, culture and common inheritance, while also celebrating the distinct traditions, identities and contributions of the north; celebrates the role of Yorkshire in helping shape England, from its Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Northumbrian roots to its continuing contribution to public life, industry, culture, sport and community; further believes that English identity is strongest when it is open, rooted, confident and generous; and calls on schools, museums, heritage bodies and civic institutions to work together to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of England’s political unification.
