The motion
That this House marks the 60th anniversary of the Llynpenmaen (Penmaenpool) tragedy of 22 July 1966, one of the worst maritime disasters in Wales, when the pleasure boat Prince of Wales sank on the Mawddach Estuary, resulting in the loss of 15 lives; remembers with deep respect those who lost their lives and extends its thoughts to their families and loved ones; recognises the lasting impact of the tragedy on the local community and on all those affected; welcomes the memorial service being organised by Dolgellau Town Council to commemorate this significant anniversary and the unveiling of a new memorial plaque; notes that the plaque will stand in memory of the 15 people who died and as a tribute to the 28 people who survived, as well as to the local residents, hotel staff and others who, with great courage and selflessness, assisted in the rescue efforts; further recognises that the tragedy prompted important changes to passenger boat safety regulations; and pays tribute to the enduring spirit of remembrance shown by the communities of Dolgellau, Penmaenpool and the wider Meirionnydd area in ensuring that those who perished, those who survived and those who came to their aid are never forgotten.
