The motion
That this House takes pride in the widespread international recognition of Britain's university system as one of the finest in the world; welcomes the planned future expansion in student numbers which will mean that by the year 2000 one in three of the country's young people will benefit from full-time higher education; is aware that mature entrants to higher education have risen by 65 per cent. since 1979 and that universities are attracting increasing numbers of foreign students; notes the considerable contribution universities are making to research which benefits industry and society as a whole; believes that the contribution university academic and related staffs are making should be properly recognised so that their morale is raised; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government to hold immediate discussions with a view to establishing a pay review body for university academic and related staffs.
