CHILD SUPPORT ACT 1991

That this House, whilst fully supporting the principle that absent parents should provide adequate financial support for the children of failed relationships, is deeply concerned that the Child Support Act 1991 is failing both parents and children; notes that many children cared for by a single parent are now far worse off financially due to subsequent cuts in income support and family credit when maintenance orders are taken into account; believes the Act is designed to support the Treasury rather than the child; and urges the Government to conduct a fundamental review of the Child Support Act to ensure that its provisions benefit and enhance the quality of life for all children, particularly those living in single parent families.
