The motion

That this House, recognising the unique qualities of English apples and the importance of the top fruit industry, which generates employment for over 100,000 people, expresses its concern at the difficulties facing growers of English apples, particularly Cox, arising from a serious fall in prices caused largely by a structural surplus in Europe, calls on Her Majesty's Government to press the European Community to introduce, before the next harvest, a scheme to reduce that structural surplus through grubbing grants and through reductions in intervention prices for varieties in surplus.
