MINEFIELD DE-MINING IN CYPRUS

That this House applauds the actions of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, which is now unilaterally clearing minefields within the United Nations buffer zone and in doing so is clearly showing its full support of the United Nations policy and the Ottawa convention on this important issue; notes that this work will take an estimated one year to complete and that some 2,300 mines will be cleared at a cost of 2.5 million euro; and calls on the Government to give the fullest support to the Republic of Cyprus Government in this programme, as the European Union and the United Nations are doing.
