What the petition asks

In many coastal and inland towns, the explosion in the population of Seagulls, especially Herring Gulls, is presenting a danger to the public from Seagull attack. Current legislation prohibits the cull of Gulls and places restrictions on what actions can be taken to reduce the Gull population.

The principal legislation dealing with the control of birds is the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The Act only allows measures to be taken against Seagulls in limited circumstances, and only the owner or occupier can take action against gulls nesting on their buildings. Legislation should be changed and Councils and local authorities given a statutory responsibility to take action to cull Seagulls where their population present a menace and danger the health & safety of citizens.
