What the petition asks

There are better ways to celebrate events & remember loved ones than needless littering, resulting in injured or dead wildlife & livestock. Once released balloons/lanterns return to earth (or sea); where they endanger wildlife & livestock, either by entanglement or being mistaken as a food source.

Even balloon/lantern products marketed as biodegradable pose a huge risk, as in the years that they take to degrade many creatures are harmed.
There is huge variation in local government policies relating to balloon releases. Obviously once airborne balloons/lanterns aren't bound by local govt areas.
The issue needs national law in order to protect the whole of the UK environment from this needless & extremely harmful litter.
