Turn our lights on Essex

Rejected 10 signatures

What the petition asks

Street lights will be turned on for an extra hour across Essex following a decision by the county council.
About 70% of lights have been turned off between midnight and 05:00 since March 2013 to save £1m annually.Safety and crime concerns led some local councils to offer to fund the night lighting.
Essex street light switch-off blamed for crime surge
13 July 2014 Last updated at 13:33 BST
People in Essex are blaming a spate of accidents and an increase in crime on the county council's decision to switch off street lights for five hours during the night.

Why it was rejected

It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.

In this case we think the issue is a matter within the responsibility of the local authority and not the UK Government or Parliament.

You could submit a petition calling on the Government to introduce legislation to (for example) require local authorities to keep street lighting switched on during the hours of darkness.
