Lower VAT for hospitality business, hotel, accommodation and tourism sector

What the petition asks
Unfair VAT levels hold back the hotel trade in the UK. The hotel trade is labour intensive. Most hotel expenses are not VAT reclaimable. There is not a lot a hotel can claim VAT back on, unlike the retail trade and manufacturing. VAT is virtually 20% of all a hotel turnover with little reclaimable.
Most European countries support hotels via low VAT rates:
Austria - 10%, Belgium -12% restaurants and 6% hotels, Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, Lithuania, Romania - 9%, Croatia - 13%, Cyprus - 9%, Finland, France, Italy, Spain - 10%, Germany, Malta - 7%, Greece, Netherlands, Portugal - 6%, Latvia - 12%, Luxembourg - 3%, Poland - 8%, Slovenia - 9,5%, Sweden - 13%. Standard VAT rates in these countries are from 17% to 27%.
