Petition · past parliament

Abolish all expenses, benefits for MP's and bring their wages down to NMW.

Rejected 20 signatures

What the petition asks

Given how out of touch our MP's have become with the living standards in the UK it is only right that the should be equal to an average working person.
Therefore this petition is a call for all the wages for politician to be lowered to be in-line with the national minimum wage limit. Further for all the benefits and expenses schemes to be scraped.

Why it was rejected

It asked for something that is not the responsibility of the UK Government or Parliament.

The Government and Parliament don’t have the power to set MPs’ pay. That power was given by Parliament to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) in 2010, so that after 2012 MPs no longer had control over their own pay. IPSA conducted a public consultation after 2012 and decided what the salaries of MPs should be after the election.

IPSA is also repsonsible for the rules about MPs' business costs and expenses.
