What the petition asks
Current student loans are inaccessible to Muslims, who follow Sharia, which forbids paying interest on loans. A system as proposed by the consultation detailed below would make accessing University a reality for Muslim students, and would result in a more representative student body.
The Liberal Democrat-Conservative coalition launched a consultation on Sharia-compliant student finance in 2014. The final part of the conclusion is as follows:
" However, in light of the positive response to the proposals in the consultation, the Government supports the introduction of a
Sharia-compliant Takaful Alternative Finance product available to everyone and will work on its
development."
