Take the Lawyers out of child contact decisions in divorce/separation cases.

Rejected 16 signatures

What the petition asks

Decisions about child contact/residency are made by lawyers who use children as a bargaining tool to achieve material gain in divorce matters. Lawyers are not qualified in child health or welfare. The best parent for the child may not have sufficient contact if aren't able to afford the lawyers
By its nature the family law system is accusatory and looks to apportion blame to provide advantage.Best interests of children aren't served as they are second to achieving the win and prolonging cases for the lawyer's own financial benefit. Parental contact should be resolved by people trained in child welfare who do not derive financial gain.Mediation should be compulsory and the children's welfare separate to financial dispute resolution. Children need both parents, not lawyers.

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

It's not clear what changes you would like to the family law system. If you would like all disputes about child contact or residency to be resolved through compulsory mediation, and not handled by the courts, you could start a petition calling for that.
