What the petition asks
This petition calls for the UK government to implement an incentive based deposit return scheme to encourage the recycling of plastic and metal drinks bottles and cans. A well planned scheme in supermarkets will create employment while tackling the increase in coastal littering up 40% since 2014*
*The Marine Conservation Society recently reported that more than 8,000 bottles were picked up during its Great British Beach Clean Up in September, up 43% on 2014.
The MCS said putting a charge on the bottles of up to 20p, which gets refunded when they are returned and would change behaviour.
Successful schemes operate in several European countries where consumers can return specially marked bottles and cans to supermarket based facilities.
