Stop expats living for more than 15 years out of UK to vote in EU referendum
Rejected
14 signatures
What the petition asks
In the EU referendum, only British expats who have lived for less than 15 years can vote. However, there is now a move for this to be lifted in time for the referendum. This could lead to a huge loss in votes for the Leave side as most British expats living in the EU will vote remain.
Why it was rejected
It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.
The Government has said that it does have plans to change this rule, but that this will not happen in time for the EU referendum. It's therefore not clear what action you would like the Government to take that is different from what it is already doing.
