Change the law on eligibility to stand for elected local government posts
Closed
37 signatures
What the petition asks
Make it unlawful to hold 2 elected posts within local government simultaneously. Make it unlawful for 2 members of the same household (eg spouses) to hold simultaneous posts within the same County council or District within that county.
Recent elections for Police and Crime Commissioner in Warwickshire resulted in the candidate elected being the spouse of the Leader of Warwickshire County Council. The leader of Stratford upon Avon District council also holds a position on Warwickshire County Council. Other councillors hold positions on both District and County Councils. It is hard to envisage how these dual roles and close relationships can not lead to undemocratic influences, whether knowingly or unwittingly.
