Take the lead in bringing internationally mandated prosecutions against SriLanka

Closed 1,020 signatures

What the petition asks

We the undersigned urge the British government to take the lead in bringing internationally mandated prosecutions against former and serving officials of the Sri Lankan state for the crimes of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Tamils.

In the last stages of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka, 146, 679 Tamils became unaccounted for - either massacred or ‘disappeared’ by the Sri Lankan armed forces.

The UN announced in September 2015 that if established before a court of law, Sri Lanka’s actions may amount to war crimes and/or crimes against humanity. Subsequently, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights noted that if independent trials were to take place, a court of law may even find Sri Lanka guilty of committing genocide.
