What the petition asks
It's time for a new approach to political campaigning that enables well-informed decision-making. The EU referendum was fueled by claims that misled and played on fear. Campaigning should be subject to stronger independent regulation similar to advertising standards, to separate opinion from fact.
The Electoral Commission, Ofcom and The Advertising Standards Agency have roles in regulating political campaigning. They can protect 'personal character' or respond to possible libel, but there are few if any rules to stop campaigners misleading the public with opinions presented as fact, or making false claims.
