Create an independent regulator to ensure truthful political campaigning

What the petition asks
To be truly served by democracy, we must be able to trust information provided by politicians. Claims by official political campaigns must be tested for truthfulness and political campaigners must be forced to publicly retract claims subsequently demonstrated to be false.
In the EU referendum campaign, both sides were criticised for the poor quality of debate. False claims were made and widely repeated.
One of the most disturbing themes of the campaign was a mistrust of expert opinions and academic/scientific evidence. Evidence available was largely ignored. That big decisions should be made on the basis of good evidence is not debatable.
Clearly, this needs to come from campaigners themselves.
