What the petition asks
Democracy can only operate effectively when voters are well informed. Both sides in the recent referendum campaign made misleading and untrue statements. We do not permit businesses to make misleading statements in order to gain customers, we should not allow campaigns to do likewise to gain votes
47% of people believed the "£350m" claim made by the Leave campaign - http://goo.gl/OTzLHb - few people will verify such claims using sites such as fullfact.org. Every political campaign broadcast, leaflet, advert and billboard should, in future be independently checked before release. Errors should be corrected, ambiguities and uncertain predictions appropriately caveated. Yes, this will costly and time consuming, but such a cost will be trivial compared with the cost to our democracy.
