Petition · past parliament

Hold second referendum to include 16 and 17 year old voters.

Rejected 13 signatures

What the petition asks

The young people of the UK will be affected for a greater proportion of their lives than other groups. As it will take two years for the UK to leave the EU, 16 and 17 year olds will reach the age of majority by that time and should have the right to vote on their own futures.
There is precedent for this in the UK as Scotland extended the voting age to include 16 and 17 years olds in the refendum on Scottish independence.

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

The EU referendum has already taken place. It is therefore no longer possible for the franchise (the groups of people who are entitled to vote) to be changed.

If you would like the UK voting age to be lowered to 16, you might like to sign this petition instead:

Reduce the legal voting age to 16
