What the petition asks
MPs cannot be required in good conscience to elect a Prime Minister based on a platform to invoke article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, to initiate the UK leaving the EU, if they understand this to be opposed to the interests of their constituents and could lead to the breakup of the United Kingdom.
The leaderships of both of the main UK parties are now contested. It is not in the interests of the UK for our membership of the EU and its future, to be placed on hold during the 3 month period likely to resolve party leaderships and to choose the next Prime Minister. Political parties may voluntarily suspend operations, and leave and remain candidates and campaigns can contest all constituencies. The current constitutional crisis crisis can be resolved by this means much sooner.
