What the petition asks
Within a few days of the referendum, there has been a significant downturn in the UK’s financial position, Scotland’s politicians have commenced the process of breaking away from the UK, and there is the real prospect of serious internecine strife in Northern Ireland.
The ‘Leave' campaign won but with only 37% of eligible voters backing it. MPs have a general duty to act "in the interests of the nation as a whole”. Critically, Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to Remain. To leave the EU, Parliament must repeal the EC Act 1972 and then agree to action Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and requires a vote. Parliament could therefore decide to stay in the EU on the basis that remaining in the EU is "in the interest of the nation as a whole”.
