What the petition asks
Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty states, "Any Member State may decide to withdraw from the Union in accordance with its own constitutional requirements"
The Prime Minister does not have authority to invoke Article 50 as the referendum has no constitutional basis without ratification from Parliament
The Prime Minister does not have authority to invoke Article 50 as the referendum has no constitutional basis without ratification from Parliament
The referendum result is only advisory and has no legal basis without ratification from Parliament. Such ratification would satisfy the constitutional requirements specified in Article 50.
Given that the result was so closely contested, it is in the best interests of the people of the United Kingdom to hold a Parliamentary debate and vote on this matter to establish whether or not Article 50 should be invoked.
