What the petition asks
Food production causes a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions that are driving global warming. Both the UN International Research Panel and the Oxford University Martin Programme have suggested pricing in the environmental impacts of meat and dairy are vital steps to combating climate change.
The Oxford report states average surcharges of 40% on beef and 20% on milk would account for the damage they cause people via climate change and Maarten Hajer, the lead author of the UN report has recommended similar action. We hereby call on the government to implement such taxes to help meet our international obligations to combat climate change.
