Make sharia councils illegal in the uk

Rejected 14 signatures

What the petition asks

Sharia law or councils are set up all over the uk these councils take the law into there own hands by passing the British justice system. They deal with crimes such as theft to physical assault under their own judgment this should not be allowed crimes in the uk should be judged in a British court.
Sharia councils or sharia law also deal with marriage and divorce they have the final say weather or not a women is allowed to divorce their male counterpart without the women having the option to decide for herself. Sharia bypasses and conflicts British law and human rights and should be banned immediately.

Why it was rejected

It was not clear what the petition asked the UK Government or Parliament to do.

In a response to a previous petition, the Government said:

There are a number of Sharia councils in England and Wales which help Muslim communities resolve civil and family disputes, by making recommendations, which they hope the parties will abide by. They are not part of the court system in this country and have no means of enforcing their decisions. If any of the decisions or recommendations they make are contrary to national law (including the Equality Act 2010) then national law prevails. This is no different to any other council or tribunal - whether or not based on Sharia principles.

You can read the full response here:

Ban all sharia law in the u.k

It is therefore not clear what action you would like the Government to take, since Sharia councils already operate under British law in the UK.
