Petition · past parliament

Make vehicle road tax date specific, like the MOT and not month to month as now.

Rejected 14 signatures

What the petition asks

The MOT is for the full 12 months.
Insurance companies provide a full 12 months cover.
A car hire company has no trouble charging you for the correct period. If you booked the car from the 21st of the month and they charged you from the 1st of the month. it would likely be a criminal offence.
In the days of the paper VEL disc it was necessary to print discs in advance.
However, the paper disc has been dropped.
Now, if you buy a car on the 21st of February, you are charged for the VEL from the 1st and it expires on the last day of the following January. You lose three weeks worth of VEL and therefore money.
This cannot be justified.
Computers can be programmed to accept any date to any date, giving a full 6 or 12 month cover, the same as you get with the MOT system.
