What the petition asks

Defra refuse to improve the microchip regulations to give dog and cat owners the best chance of being reunited with their lost pets. Stolen pets are often sold on to unsuspecting new owners. Microchip registration must be checked to ensure pet and owner match at the first visit to the vets.

‘The Government does not consider it necessary to require vets & animal welfare authorities who come into contact with a dog to scan it in order to check compliance with the microchipping requirements or to establish whether the dog is lost or stolen’

Microchip checking is the obvious process to help reunite missing pets but vets don’t want to police this or get involved with ownership disputes even though there are clear guidelines in place & Best Practice advice.

Why it was rejected

There was already a petition about this issue. Duplicates are rejected so signatures collect in one place.

UK Government to pass a law requiring Vets to scan all newly registered animals.
